This feat is varied by slashing off the truuk, leaving it dangling only by a piece of Bkin. A ghoorka has been seen to behead a buffalo with a single blow of bis cookrie. And Sir Samuel Baker, a man powerful enough to wield during his African exploration the baby, an elephant rifle weighing 22 pouuds, once clove a wild bear with his big bunting knife almost in halves as It was making a flual rush, catching it just behind the shoulder where the hide and bristles are at least a span thick. Sir Walter Scott relates bow the Karl of Angus, with bis huge sweeping brand, challenged an opponent to fight and at a blow chopped asunder bis thigh bone, killing him on the spot. There is a story current in Australia that a Lieutenant Anderson In 1852, during an encounter with bushrangers, cut clean through the gun barrel of his adversary with liis sword.

The waiter girl at our table was imbued with sincere desire to give satisfaction. She did her best to get from the kitchen precisely what each boarder asked for, and she succeeded very well indeed. The other evening at dinner she said Interrogatively to each man in turn, Chicken or tomato soup? aud one made answer, Tonmyto, and the second said Tomawto soup, please, and the third added, I'll take tomatto. Whereupon the intelligent maiden delivered the several orders Into the kitchen in this wise, One toinayto soup, one tomawto soup and one tomatto soup. Thus each guest received precisely what he bad asked for and was happy uutil the next order was takeu.

Charles Battell Loomis in Rramlur Magazine. An EngliNh Sanctuary. Beverley minster, ISO miles north of London, is the shrine of St John of Beverley, who died in the year 721. In 038 Athelstan, king of England, gave several privileges to the monastery, one being the privilege of sanctuary. This was not merely for man-slaying; it was open to all wrongdoers except those who had been guilty of treason.

For ordinary offenses, such as horse stealing, cattle stealing, being backward in accounts or being iu re ceipt of suspected goods, a man came Into sanctuary about a mile from the monastery or church. There used to be four crosses ou the main roads leading to Beverley marking the limit of the area. In eases of manslaughter and murder it was not sufficient to be with in one of these crosses. Before the fugitive could claim sauctmuy lie must enter the church and seat himself in a stone chair known as the I'rid stool' or freed chair. To this place many fled for refuge from all parts of the country.
