SAN FRANCISCO. Dec. 22. Ex-; animation of half a dozen witnesses, before a coroner jury yesterday failed to throw any additional light upon the manner in which J-Biggv, late chief of the police department, met bis death in the waters of San Fraicisco bay.

Coroner Leland succeeded in accounting ior every movement of df'ad official on the; afternoon and evening of Xov. .10, the night of his death, hut all the; witnesses agreed that Thief Biggy was in his usual spiiiis; that he showed no evidences of intoxication.) and that there was no apparent rea-1 son why tie should commit suicide. On the afternoon in question, how-1 ever, the chief had complained to sev- era! persons that he was being shad--owed by private detectives, but he circumstance was a source of annoy-' ance rather than depression. Engineer Murphy of the Patrol told of the visit to Relvedere and his discovery that the chief was missing, i He testified that the dead official had referred to the fact that he was being shadowed and expressed a desire to avoid the searchlights of ferry boats. After hearing some further testimony tiie jury retired and after deliberating for a short time returned a verdict to the effect that the death of Chief rfiggy was duo to accidental drowning.

COIN IN PURSE WHEN MISSED WAS STILL THERE WHEN PRISONER WAS SEARCHED. Jose Villaneuva. a Mexican, is under arrest on the charge violating the city ordinance prohibiting the appearing of a person on the street in a drunken condition, but before he is through with the deal he may have a charge of larceny placed against him by W. M. Joplin, who claims the ownership of the purse which was found in the Mexicans possession when arrested by Officer Conard Sunday evening.

Monday morning City Marshal Frederick noted the resemblance between the purse owned by the Mexican and tiie one reported lost by Mr. Joplin, and calling the latter into consultation, it was found that on the day that the purse was lost, Villanueva was one who helped look for the same. A part of the $5.50 which the purse contained when lost was still in the purse, and as the man was thought to have been broke it would seem that he came into possession of the money in a peculiar way. The Mexican was taken in and Sheltered by Mr. Joplin and in this w'ay.

he has repaid the latter for bis kindness. When City Recorder Camp is able to be out the case will be taken up and very likely a complaint will be bled charging larceny as stated. 4. 4. INSTRUMENTS RECORDED.
