THE HANFORD MORNING JOURNAL. FRIDAY, APRIL: 18, 1919. PAGE SEVEN BIG BAPTIST DRIVE IS NOW UNDER WAY Rockefeller Will Give 000 if Remainder of Six Million Is Raised. The Baptist church of the nation is In the midst of a great campaign to raise Six Millions of dollars for the world work of that denomination, the drive having opened on the 6th inst. The first ten days of the drive indi.

cate that the great undertaking will prove successful, as may be judged from the following telegrams from the New York headquarters of the Laymen's Committee: Prof. W. F. Martin, Chairman, Berkeley, Cal. Individual gifts of April 6th to 16th opened auspiciously.

Believe ultimate success is assured by four factors: First, splendid Ministers and Missionaries campaign just closed: second. Mr. Rockefeller's promise to increase his gift to $750.000 if the full Six Million dollars is raised: third, the rising tide of enthusiasm in a majority of States: fourth, God's promised blessing. FRED P. HAGGARD, National Director.

H. Bowler, Western Ex. Secretary, Berkeley. Cal. Endeavors for M.

M. fund reaches successful conclusion through Rockefeller pledge of $250,000. He promises to increase gift to $750.000 it $6.000,000 is attained. Make every effort to compass the Six Million total by April 16th. Then continue the campaign till crowned with success by April 30th.

HAGGARD. The campaign in California is propressing most favorably, A spirit of enthusiasm fort the great undertaking has taken possession of nearly all of the churches in the State. Men outwide the communion, even, have proffered assistance unsolicited. When the world sees man or woman, or society, trying to "put across" something for humanity's good, it desires to share in the work. Here are a few Illustrations At Boise, Idaho, three men gave $700- as much as the entire church gave last year; another man contributed as much as the entire church did the vear before one church in Nevada has given as much on the drive as the entire State did last year.

The same condition applies to Utah, where one church has already contributed more than the whole State did last year, and second church promises to do likewise. Idaho has already gone "over the top." The churches of Southern Califormla, especially, are afre with enthusiasm. Before the date of the drive. they had raised $42,000. One church, Dr.

First Church, raised $7,500 in twenty-four hours. Northern California churches have aiso caught the spirit, The Berkeley First Church raised $1,000 the first day of the drive. The First Church of San Francisco made a great day of the opening date. It, was Dr. Henry's last service and the membership delighted him by going into the drive strong -between $500 and $600 ever their budget.

The San Joaquin Valley churches did not wait for the opening of the campaign. Great prog. ress has been made, and the outlook there 1s bright. CUT THIS OUT- IT IS WORTH MONEY DON'T MISS THIS. The majority of Japanese young girls never exchange a word with a man of marriageable age outside their own immediate family. There is no masculine audience for young feminine coquettes and there is no masculine eye to admire the little personal adornments. the choice of which fills such a large part of the frivolous western sister's exciting life. It would seem indeed that life for the young Japanese girl is mainly a matter of negations, observes the New East Magazine. She has no real clothes problem.

Her dress has been designed by some mysterious power long before she was born. It has been decreed that at a certain age she shall wear certain colors, which must be changed at certain seasons. Her kimono shall have longer or shorter sleeves on this or that occasion. Her obi shall be so high and of such and such colors. She has not even to think of how she shall arrange her hair, for the same mysterious power has decreed that the hair shall be oiled, stiffened, combed and twisted into a given pattern.

As this mysterious power has to be obeyed, a hairdresser has to be employed regularly for the right fixing of this coiffure. A Japanese girl is scarcely an individual, but is rather part of a plan, and her silhouette must correspond with the plan. A husband having been obtained for her. a dowry provided, her wardrobe filled, she has not even to exercise originality in the furnishing of her home. The same mysterious power has decreed how this home shall look.
